Do You Have TMJ?

Jaw Pain Is Not Something You Have to Live With

TMJ disorders (TMD) affect millions of adults โ€” often misdiagnosed for years as migraines, ear infections, or stress. The first step toward relief is an accurate diagnosis from a provider trained to identify the real source of your symptoms.
At Arizona Center for Laser Dentistry, our Scottsdale TMJ evaluation is a thorough, structured process โ€” not a quick glance and guess. We use advanced imaging, bite analysis, and a full symptom history to pinpoint exactly what’s happening in your jaw joints before recommending any treatment.

What to Expect at Your TMJ Exam

1
Schedule & Intake (Before You Arrive)
After booking, you'll receive a short digital intake form covering your jaw symptoms, health history, and any prior treatments. This lets us make the most of your appointment time.
2
Symptom Review & Health History (15 min)
Your provider will sit with you to understand your experience โ€” when symptoms started, what makes them better or worse, your sleep quality, stress levels, and any treatments you've tried.
3
Clinical Jaw Examination (15 min)
A hands-on assessment of your jaw joints and surrounding muscles, measuring range of motion, identifying areas of tenderness, and evaluating your bite and tooth wear patterns.
4
CBCT Imaging โ€” When Needed (10 min)
If warranted, we take a cone beam CT scan in our office for a 3D look at the joint space, condyle position, and disc. Results are reviewed immediately โ€” no waiting for a radiology report.
5
Diagnosis & Treatment Plan Review (15 min)
Your provider explains the findings in plain language, confirms a diagnosis, and walks through your recommended treatment options โ€” from conservative care to specialist referral โ€” with no pressure.
Common Questions

TMJ Evaluation FAQs

What happens during a TMJ exam?
Your provider will review your symptoms and health history, then examine your jaw joints and surrounding muscles by feel and movement. They'll assess your bite, range of jaw motion, and listen for joint sounds. CBCT imaging may be taken to visualize the joint structures. The exam typically takes 45โ€“60 minutes.
You may benefit from a TMJ evaluation if you experience jaw pain, clicking or popping when opening your mouth, difficulty chewing, frequent headaches, ear pain without infection, limited mouth opening, or facial muscle tightness โ€” especially in the morning.
Coverage varies by plan. Some dental insurance plans cover diagnostic TMJ exams and imaging, while others classify TMJ treatment as medical. Our team will verify your benefits before your appointment and review all options with you, including flexible payment plans.
We use Cone Beam CT (CBCT) imaging, which provides a 3D view of the temporomandibular joint, condyle position, and surrounding bone. This is far more detailed than traditional 2D X-rays and allows for precise diagnosis of joint degeneration, disc displacement, or asymmetry.
In most cases, your provider will review findings and discuss a diagnosis with you at the same appointment. If CBCT images require additional analysis, a follow-up consultation is scheduled within a few days.
Depending on your diagnosis, treatment may include a custom occlusal splint or night guard, Botox injections for jaw muscle tension, physical therapy referral, bite adjustment, or specialist referral for advanced cases. Your provider will explain all options and prioritize the least invasive approach first.
