TMJ Self-Care: What Actually Helps at Home
Good self-care genuinely calms most mild TMJ episodes — and doing the wrong things reliably prolongs them. This is the routine we teach patients at our Scottsdale office.
The Core Routine
- Rest the joint. Soft-food days: soups, eggs, fish, cooked vegetables. Skip gum, ice, bagels, and jerky entirely during a flare.
- Lips together, teeth apart. Your teeth should only touch when swallowing or chewing. Check yourself hourly; clenching awareness is half the battle.
- Moist heat for muscles. A warm, damp towel over the cheek and temple for 10–15 minutes, twice daily, relaxes the masseter and temporalis.
- Cold for sharp joint pain. Brief cold packs directly over the joint (in front of the ear) when pain is acute.
- Posture resets. Screens at eye level; avoid cradling a phone with your shoulder; forward-head posture overloads jaw muscles.
- Sleep position. Back sleeping keeps the jaw neutral — see our guide to sleeping and eating with TMJ.
What to Avoid
Do not stretch the jaw forcefully "to loosen it," chew gum to exercise it, or bite-test the pain repeatedly. All three are among the most common reasons a one-week flare becomes a six-week one. Long-term daily painkiller use also masks progression without treating the cause.
When Self-Care Is Not Enough
If pain persists beyond two weeks, keeps returning, or comes with locking, chewing difficulty, or frequent headaches, the mechanics of the joint need professional attention — self-care cannot reposition a displaced disc or correct a destructive bite pattern.
When to See a TMJ Specialist
Dr. Enrico DiVito has treated TMJ disorder in Scottsdale since 1980 using a non-surgical protocol: a structured exam, CBCT 3D imaging when indicated, custom oral appliance therapy, laser-assisted muscle treatment, and T-Scan-guided bite adjustment. Learn more about TMJ treatment in Scottsdale, review TMJ symptoms, or call (480) 990-1905 for a same-week TMJ evaluation — no referral needed.
