1. I’ve always been afraid of the dentist. How can I feel more comfortable?

Not very many people like going to the doctor let alone the dentist office.  Many times bad experiences and stories come from the patients who have waited too long to seek treatment.  The issue(s) build up to the point where pain is associated with dental visits and the patient avoids treatment.    An easy way to feel more comfortable and confident about going to a dentist is to ask your friends and family to recommend a dentist they like.  Having a good experience at the dentist is not just about the relief of pain, but feeling comfortable about your surroundings and your dental provider.   It should be an educational experience as well.  If there is a bit of dental anxiety, call the office and ask if you can just drop by and see the office and meet the doctor.  Many times baby steps are needed before you leap into the dental chair.

2. What can I do to fix a badly chipped front tooth?

There are many options a patient has in order to fix a chipped tooth (front or back).  A dentist would need to gather some information in the form of pictures and x-rays to see how big/deep the chipped tooth is and rule out a possible root canal or un-savable tooth.  One option for fixing a chipped tooth is enamel shaping.  This process removes part of the contouring enamel to improve the appearance of the tooth.  It may be used to correct a very small chip of a cracked tooth or to reshape a tooth to a smooth contour.  Bonding is an option for chipped or cracked teeth as well.  It is a process in which an enamel-like dental composite material is applied to a tooth’s surface, sculpted into shape, hardened, and then polished.  For more extensive dental work, the tooth can be made entirely of porcelain to “re-enamel” your tooth (such as a veneer or crown).  This method will more closely mimic the appearance of natural tooth structure and the teeth around it.  A veneer is an ultra-thin custom-made laminate, which is bonded directly to the teeth and is an increasingly popular procedure.  Veneers are an option for closing gaps or covering discolored teeth that do not respond well to whitening procedures.  These tooth-colored materials are bonded to the underlying tooth structure with resin adhesives.  At the Arizona Center for Laser Dentistry we also utilize CEREC® restorations (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics) to give your restored tooth a more natural match to the rest of your teeth, and can help preserve the healthy part of that tooth.  This procedure can be completed in just one visit.
What is the end result?
The end result is an improved appearance, confidence and health for the patient.

4. How do you get rid of spaces between teeth?

The procedures for filling in spaces between lost or missing teeth can be achieved using some of the same procedures we use to repair chips and cracks.  A patient can seek Invisalign treatment or orthodontic treatment to close the gaps over a period of time.  Another option is the placement of crowns or veneers.  A veneer is an ultra-thin, custom-made laminate which is bonded directly to the teeth and is an increasingly popular procedure.  They are an option for closing gaps or disguising discolored teeth that do not respond well to whitening procedures.

5. What is necessary for corrections of color, crowding, chips, or spaces?

To start, a consultation should be performed so that both the dentist and the patient can get a feel for what can and cannot be done to achieve the desired result.  For minor problems that do not impact your bite, whitening can be preformed to correct the color issues.  When multiple teeth require treatment due to crowding, chips or spaces, the dentist will start by creating models of your teeth and some simple measurements of how your teeth and jaws relate.  Dentists strive to preserve or most often improve the function of your teeth while enhancing your smile appearance.  An array of options and combinations from Invisalgn to veneers to crowns can be used to help straighten short or misshapen teeth or improve crowding or space issued within the mouth.

6. How do I know the number of teeth that need to be treated and the time needed?

Looking in the mirror and seeing how many teeth show when you smile is the best way to start.  It would not be uncommon that 8-10 upper teeth need to be treated for a smile.  A person’s lower teeth don’t show as prominently as the upper teeth so the most common treatment is for 6-8 teeth upper teeth.   Treatment time can range from the same day with CEREC one day all porcelain veneers/crowns to months with Invisalign treatment. The time needed is tailored to each patient’s individual case.
